Chapter Sixteen

Myles was in no mood for the impending conversation. His mind was still reeling from the blast from the past his mother had just laid on him, and it was also still racing from the recent disastrous events that had cost Kenny his life. He didn’t want to talk about the shit. At the moment, all he wanted to do was pull the covers over his head and go to sleep for a long, long, time. He watched with great trepidation as his parents exited the room with Toya and Cassie, leaving him to the wolves. Myles settled back into the pillow as Lucas pulled a chair up to the bed so he could stare him right in his face.

Lucas put his elbows on his knees and leaned forward, staring at Myles benignly, as if nothing terrible had ever happened, but Myles knew he was on the receiving end of Lucas’s patented poker face, and he had no idea how he was going to come at him.

Noah still stood by the window, leaning against the frame in a comfortable slouch, with his thumbs stuck in the pockets of his jeans, like a cool-ass, new-age gunslinger. He was giving Myles the humorless version of the gray stare, but Myles knew he was really in trouble from the pinched look Griff was throwing at him and the subtle, red hue of anger that glowed in Myers’s face.

“How’re you feelin’, Myles? You feelin’ okay?” Myers asked, taking a step forward and frowning at him like he wanted to put his foot up Myles’s ass.

Myles blinked and tried to gather his thoughts real quick, trying hard to shake off the lingering fogginess of the anesthesia. “I…um, I got shot, Captain. I sorta guess I’m not really doing too good, ya know?”

“Oh yes,” Griff said through super-tight lips, “we can see that. Are you in any pain?”

“Yeah, some, but I guess I can handle it. I don’t know. Maybe…” Myles had been treading water and attempting to delay the inevitable, but Lucas wasn’t down for the bullshit.

“What the hell were you and Kenny doing at Stamps, Myles?” he asked flatly, staring at him like he’d damn well better answer.

Myles licked his lips, which suddenly felt extremely dry. His eyes darted instinctively to Noah, who’d become very adept at keeping Lucas off his ass; but Noah was obviously in the mood for no bullshit either, as he smirked at him, his gray eyes glittering like he was angry. “What are you lookin’ at me for? Answer the damn question,” Noah said, letting Myles know he’d find no help from him.

Myles dropped his eyes and refused to look at anybody. He tucked his lips in and stared at the snow-white hospital blanket, wishing with everything he had that he could take the day back. “I asked Kenny to go to Stamps with me because I wanted to find Jessie London. I got a tip that he spent a lot of time there. That was why I went.
